History of the Real Life Superhero Culture on the Internet

Since the publication of comics, there have been individuals who have used the iconic image of the comic book superhero to right wrongs. However, these individuals were few and far between. Due to the boom of the internet and the availability, the concept of “Real Life Superhero” changed into a culture. This culture started on a blog featured at Geeks with a blog, Mark Schmidt asked “how come there are not Real Life Superheroes? http://geekswithblogs.net/mschmidt/archive/2004/05/12/4803.aspx

Within the same year (2004) a person going only as “Kevlex” creates a online site called the World Superhero Registry or WSR. Mark Schmidt also created an online forum called “Real Life Superheroes” that was once featured at http://superheroes.members.winisp.net/ (link no longer works).

Different sites and forums came into existence. From Earth Agents to ‘incomplete’, sites start to catalog the existence and the networking of individuals using alter ego personas to operate outside of the law and conventional community activism.

In 2006, Blitz created a forum called the Hero Coalition. This was the first attempt in creating a mega network for Real Life Superheroes World Wide. Afterwards the Heroes Network and the Worldheroics forums were created as a protest to the direction of the Hero Coalition. Eventually the Heroes Network became the primary communication network for RLSH worldwide.

In 2008, a group of RLSH decided to create a website to archive and research all information pertaining to the Real Life Superheroes culture. This site is located at http://www.reallifesuperheroes.org.
